mesoamerican jewelry set
Although we no longer live in ancient times, we share many similarities to the ancient world. From the times of Mesoamerica to modern day, jewelry and personal adornment are personal items that connect us to certain emotions. For this piece, I wanted to create a set of personal adornment similar to that of traditional Mesoamerican jewelry. Xicalcoliuhqui (zi cal ko you key) is a common motif used in Aztec art and Jewelry, it it can represent natural elements but most commonly represents cyclical movement, or the life-giving connection between the light of the sun and the earth. I have chosen this symbol to recreate as I relate it to my life. Living in a place where nature is a daily part of my life, I often take it for granted by staying inside and complaining about the weather. Creating this pieces are a reminder of the importance of enjoying nature, and respecting it, as the sun gives us warmth which gives us life.
